Rhinoplasty Plastic Surgery

Rhinoplasty Before and After Photos

Rhinoplasty is also known as nose reshaping. It is a relatively common procedure performed on primarily young men and women. The nose is the central, most prominent feature of the face. Patients who wish to have their nose shape corrected are often seeking to provide better harmony with their facial features. In general, the rhinoplasty is designed to improve the appearance of the nose, as well as enhancing facial harmony and self-confidence.

Nasal features are usually caused by hereditary factors; however, there are a number of patients who have a previous history of trauma. When patients have developed breathing problems, it may be necessary to correct some of the internal structures but may have little effect on the external features of the nose. This type of surgery may be covered by insurance.

Nasal surgery is individualized to each patient taking into account all of the specific characteristics that contribute to the overall appearance of the nose. I believe it is important to evaluate each individual's goal for improvement and determine specifically the features you wish to address with surgery.

There are a great number of techniques available for nasal surgery. For many of my surgeries, I use an "open approach", which requires that an incision be used on the columella. This allows me to easily visualize the structures of the nose and make the desired changes. Other changes in the nose utilize an internal incision. Each has advantages and disadvantages; the technique will be individualized for each patient.

A splint is usually placed on the nose after surgery for about 5-7 days. This provides some protection for the nose in the immediate postoperative period. I never pack the nasal passage, but I do occasionally use internal splints which provide stabilization to the nasal septum. If an external incision is used, the sutures will be removed in 5 days. There may be some bruising around the eyes, but most patients are doing the activities of daily living within 7 days. Most of the discomfort is described as a headache. Cold compresses and pain medication usually provide relief.

It is best to protect your nose from significant sun exposure during the healing process. You should protect your nose from injury during physical activity for 4-6 months. The outcome of your nasal surgery will appear gradually over time. At a minimum, the normal time for the outcome of the surgery is one year.
