Gynecomastia is the result of breast gland hypertrophy in the male chest. It is a relatively common finding in pre-adolescent boys, but often resolves by age 15 or 16. When the hypertrophy persists into adulthood, the gland is often replaced with fatty tissue. This produces a feminine shape to the chest area. In my practice, the male patients seeking treatment are usually 25 to 35 years of age. At this age, the breast is usually a combination of gland and fatty tissue and difficult to treat using traditional liposuction techniques.
The best method of treating this type of tissue is ultrasonic assisted lipoplasty. Ultrasonic energy will “melt” the fibrous fatty tissue of the chest and produce the best contour. This is then fine tuned by using suction assisted liposuction. This procedure is done through two small incisions on each side. Following the procedure, the patient is placed in a compression vest or binder. I ask the patient to wear a compression vest or binder for 4-6 week. Most patients are able to return to work within 5-7 days.
