Cosmetic surgery of the eyelids, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure for improving the appearance of the eye area. When the upper eyelid skin is in excess, it creates a fold of skin over the lid, which may hide the natural contours of the eyelid. The lower eyelid appearance can be distorted by puffiness often due to excess fatty deposits. Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower lid also are common concerns.
My goal for eyelid surgery is to remove excess skin, reduce or eliminate puffiness, and restore some of the natural firmness and contours of the eye area. This often produces a rested and more alert appearance.
Blepharoplasty is a common surgical procedure for both men and women. Age varies depending on the individual's hereditary factors, specific goals, and degree of improvement the patient is seeking. The initial consultation will enable me to understand your concerns and provide you with the expectations from the procedure. The main focus of the consultation is education and understanding all aspects of eyelid surgery, including potential risks and complications.

As with any cosmetic surgical procedure, blepharoplasty requires an individualized approach. My goal is to provide an improvement of the specific areas of concern as well as provide smooth transition into the areas surrounding the eyes. This approach has allowed me to produce dramatic results while avoiding a "surgical look." The upper lids are corrected with skin removal and excising of the necessary fat pockets. The stitch placed just beneath the skin is removed 5 to 7 days after surgery. The lower lid is approached with two incisions. One is from the inside of the eyelid and the second is just below the eyelashes. Any excess fat tissue is removed through the inside incision. The outer incision allows me to reposition the muscle located around the eye. This allows for a blending of the transition area between the eye and cheek. The stitches in the lower lid do not require removal.
The incisions are well concealed within the natural creases of the eye. One can expect bruising and swelling which gradually subsides over 7-10 days. Make-up may be applied after removal of the upper lid stitch.
What to expect after eyelid plastic surgery
All of my surgeries are performed at a hospital facility. The anesthesia used is based on the anesthesiologist's and patient preference, but most prefer general anesthesia. Intravenous sedation, or twilight, may also be used. Following the surgery, cold compresses may be applied for comfort and control of the swelling. Saline eye drops and antibiotic ointment are used to maintain moisture for the eye and the incisions.
Initial healing will likely include swelling, bruising, and occasionally dry eyes. The incisions also may become irritated. I always suggest that patients elevate the head of their bed. Sunglasses are helpful as the sunlight and wind is uncomfortable. I ask that patients avoid any straining or heavy lifting for several days following the surgery. Usually after 3 to 5 days, patients are ready to return to most of their daily living activities.
Eyelid lift results
I explain to patients that it will take several months before the results are fully refined. The scar lines begin with a red color then fade over 4 to 6 months. Revisions are rarely required but these possibilities are reviewed in the consultation time. While the surgical results can correct certain results with permanence, you will continue to age naturally. The surgical results can be optimized with life-long sun protection and avoiding tobacco smoke.
